7. Christopher Newport was an explorer who was known for founding a new settlement called Jamestown on May 14, 1607. What was Jamestown named after? Why did the King of England send him to the world? What present day state would Christopher Newport be responsible for building the history of?

8.Watch the video "On the trail of Captain John Smith, A Jamestown Adventure" until you get to part 3 "John Smith is captured" very closely. This will help you learn more about this leader and explorer of the colony Jamestown. After you finish this video, there are more videos to tell about the life and adventures of John Smith, and fun games you can play too! What did John Ratcliffe appoint John Smith as? What river does John Smith Explore, and what does he hope to find? What item saves Johns' life when he is captured by Indians, and why does it save his life?

9. Have you ever heard of the Hudson River in New York? Have you ever wondered how it got it's name? Read the article "Henry Hudson and Early Hudson River History and find out! What was Henry Hudson searching for when he found the New World instead? Hudson's ship was called the Moon. Even though Hudson didn't find the Orient, what good was this region know for as the best in North America? In a brief time-line of the colonization of the New World consider the following; Hudson's voyage came years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and years after Jamestown colony was established 60 miles south of the entrance to Chesapeake Bay.
